Baked Apples with Crumble Topping

A classic dessert highlighting the sweetness of baked apples paired with a crunchy, flavorful topping. Perfect for family gatherings or cozy evenings.

  • 4 large apples (Honeycrisp, Braeburn, or Empire)
  • 1 1/8 cups old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/41/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt (sea salt preferred)
  • 2 1/4 tablespoons melted unsalted butter (cooled)
  • 2 1/4 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup apple cider (or apple juice)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Slice the tops of the apples off and remove the stems and cores carefully.
  3. Spray an oven-safe dish with nonstick spray.
  4. In a bowl, combine oats, chopped pecans, ground cinnamon, ground ginger, and salt. Add cooled melted butter and maple syrup, mixing well.
  5. Stuff the apples with the oat-pecan mixture.
  6. Pour apple cider into the bottom of the dish and cover with foil.
  7. Bake for 30 minutes, basting every 5-10 minutes with the juice.
  8. In the last 5 minutes, remove the foil to allow the topping to crisp.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving, optionally with ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

For a vegan option, replace unsalted butter with coconut oil and maple syrup with agave syrup. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
