Homemade Stovetop Apple Butter

A simple and delicious homemade apple butter recipe that brings out the hidden sweetness of apples, perfect for spreading on toast or pancakes.

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds apples (mixed varieties recommended)
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar (or to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: pinch of ground cloves or nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup apple cider or water

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and chop the apples.
  2. Toss apples in a large heavy pot or Dutch oven.
  3. Add brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and optional cloves or nutmeg.
  4. Pour in apple cider or water, enough to get started without drowning.
  5. Set the pot over medium-low heat and stir occasionally; simmer uncovered for 1.5 to 2 hours.
  6. Once mushy, blend until smooth with an immersion blender.
  7. If too runny, cook over low heat, stirring until thickened.
  8. Let cool before transferring to jars.

Notes

Homemade apple butter keeps well in the fridge for at least two weeks. For longer storage, freeze it in containers.
