Grilled Chicken Legs

A flavor-packed dish that’s simple to make and perfect for summer barbecues or family dinners.

  • 45 pounds chicken legs (patted dry)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar (packed)
  • 2 tablespoons kosher salt
  • 2 tablespoons paprika
  • 1/2 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your gas grill on high until it reaches 400°F.
  2. Whisk together the chicken rub ingredients: brown sugar, kosher salt, paprika, ground cumin, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  3. Generously rub the chicken legs with the spice mixture.
  4. Turn two burners to low, place chicken legs over the low burners, and cook with the lid closed.
  5. Grill chicken for about 20 minutes to get nice color.
  6. Prepare the BBQ sauce by boiling all sauce ingredients in a saucepan, then simmering for 15 minutes.
  7. Flip the chicken legs after 20 minutes and cook for an additional 20 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.
  8. Remove from grill, brush with BBQ sauce, and serve immediately.

Notes

For enhanced flavor, consider marinating the chicken legs for several hours in the rub. Use a meat thermometer to ensure perfectly cooked chicken.
