Heart-Shaped Macarons

Delicate and charming heart-shaped macarons, perfect for expressing love on special occasions.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup almond flour
  • 2 large egg whites (at room temperature)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Red or pink food coloring (optional)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for filling)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for filling)
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • Pinch of salt
  • Red food coloring (optional for filling)

Instructions

  1. Sift the powdered sugar and almond flour together into a bowl and set aside.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add granulated sugar and whisk until stiff peaks form.
  3. Gently fold the sifted almond flour and powdered sugar mixture into the whipped egg whites. Add food coloring if desired.
  4. Transfer the batter into a piping bag and pipe heart shapes onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Let the piped macarons sit at room temperature for 30 minutes to 1 hour to form a dry skin.
  6. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C). Bake the macarons for 18 to 20 minutes.
  7. For the buttercream filling, beat the softened butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar. Mix in vanilla and a pinch of salt.
  8. Add heavy cream or milk and blend until smooth, adding food coloring if desired.
  9. Once the macaron shells are cooled, flip them over and pipe buttercream onto one shell, then sandwich it with another shell.
  10. For best flavor, refrigerate the assembled macarons for at least 24 hours.

Notes

Macarons can be customized with different colors and flavors. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5-7 days or freeze for up to a month.
