Hot Chocolate with Homemade Marshmallows

Warm and creamy homemade hot chocolate topped with fluffy marshmallows, perfect for chilly days.

Ingredients

  • 1 liter (4 cups) milk
  • 5 ml (1 teaspoon) vanilla extract
  • 170 g (6 oz) good quality semi-sweet or milk chocolate
  • 315 g (1 1/2 cups) sugar
  • 75 ml (1/3 cup) hot water
  • 25 ml (5 teaspoons) gelatin
  • 125 ml (1/2 cup) cold water
  • 25 g (3 tablespoons) icing sugar
  • 15 ml (1 tablespoon) cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Line a 33 x 23 cm (13 x 9 inch) pan with plastic wrap and lightly oil it.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the sugar, hot water, and vanilla extract until sugar is dissolved.
  3. In another bowl, sprinkle gelatin over cold water and let it swell for about 5 minutes.
  4. Heat the swollen gelatin until dissolved, then add to the sugar mixture.
  5. Beat the mixture with an electric mixer for about 10 minutes until fluffy.
  6. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan and let it set overnight.
  7. The next day, mix icing sugar and cornstarch, then coat the marshmallows.
  8. Cut the marshmallows into cubes.
  9. In a saucepan, heat milk and vanilla extract until hot but not boiling.
  10. Add chocolate pieces and whisk until melted and combined.
  11. Serve hot chocolate in cups topped with marshmallow cubes.

Notes

For a special touch, serve with whipped cream or a sprinkle of cocoa powder.
