Mexican Champurrado Delight

A warm and comforting Mexican drink made with chocolate and masa harina, perfect for chilly days.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups milk (or a mix of milk and water)
  • 2 oz Mexican chocolate or dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1/4 cup masa harina (corn flour)
  • 1/4 cup piloncillo or brown sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, heat the 4 cups of milk over medium heat and add the cinnamon stick. Let it simmer gently.
  2. In a small bowl, dissolve the masa harina in 1 cup of warm water, whisking until smooth.
  3. Slowly add the masa mixture to the saucepan, then add the chopped chocolate and piloncillo.
  4. Stir continuously to melt the chocolate and mix everything well.
  5. Let it simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring until thickened to desired consistency.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  7. Pour the champurrado hot into a mug and enjoy.

Notes

Serve warm, optionally topped with cinnamon. Pairs well with sweet breads or churros.
