Old German Fruit Cake

A delightful and versatile Old German dessert made with butter, sugar, eggs, and fruit, perfect for any occasion.

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups apples, peeled and diced (or other fruit)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. Stir in buttermilk and vanilla extract.
  5. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
  7. Fold in the diced apples (or other fruit).
  8. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and smooth the top.
  9. Bake for 30-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Allow to cool before serving.
