Skillet Apple Crisp with Oatmeal Crumble

A delightful dessert featuring sweet apples topped with a crunchy oatmeal crumble, perfect for any occasion.

  • 1 cup (84 g) old fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup (70 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup (112 g) cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 2/3 cup (133 g) granulated sugar
  • 3 Tbsp (24 g) arrowroot starch or cornstarch
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 7 cups (840 g) peeled and diced apples
  • 1/2 tsp pure almond extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) with a rimmed baking sheet lined with foil.
  2. Lightly grease a seasoned 10-inch cast iron skillet.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine oats, flour, dark brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until large crumbs form. Chill in the freezer.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together granulated sugar, arrowroot starch, ground cinnamon, and salt. Add the apples and almond extract, tossing gently to coat.
  5. Spoon the apple filling into the prepared skillet and sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake for 55 to 60 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.
  7. Allow to cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before serving.
  8. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
