Mom’s Flat Apple Pie

A nostalgic yet healthier version of the classic apple pie, featuring a flaky crust and tart Granny Smith apples.

  • 3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cups shortening
  • 1 egg yolk
  • Enough milk to make 1 cup with egg yolk
  • 23 handfuls of Corn Flakes
  • 10 Granny Smith apples, sliced and cored
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 48 Tbsp butter, cubed
  • 1 egg white, beaten
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2/3 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 dashes vanilla extract
  • Milk, as needed

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Prepare the dough by mixing all-purpose flour, salt, and shortening until crumbly.
  3. Add the egg yolk and enough milk to create a total of 1 cup when combined with the egg yolk.
  4. Roll out half of the dough and fit it into a 15×10-inch cookie sheet.
  5. Spread the Corn Flakes evenly over the bottom crust.
  6. Layer the sliced Granny Smith apples over the Corn Flakes.
  7. Mix sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl and sprinkle over the apples.
  8. Dot the apples with cubed butter.
  9. Roll out the second half of the dough and lay over the apple filling.
  10. Brush the top crust with beaten egg white and sprinkle with sugar.
  11. Cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  12. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  13. Prepare the glaze by mixing powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and enough milk to reach a thin consistency.
  14. Glaze the pie after removing from the oven.
  15. Cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

For a healthier dessert, consider using sugar substitutes and gluten-free flour.
